Postdoc in Cardiovascular Medicine at Solna, Sweden

Working place
The postdoc position is placed in Prof. Thomas Renné’ s research group in a modern laboratory at Karolinska Hospital Solna. Our international team belongs both to MMK and the Center of Molecular Medicine (CMM). In the latest external assessment of research constellations at Karolinska Institutet (ERA 2010), our unit was ranked outstanding in the cardiovascular research area. The group has established transgene, inducible expression systems, and gene-deficient mouse models to study the nexus of coagulation and inflammation. We have access to clinical material and advanced mouse imaging facilities including intravital microscopy and NMR. The position is initially for a 2 years periode with the possibility for an additional 2 year-prolongation and would be most suitable for an experienced scientist seeking his/her second postdoc or an independent research position.
Area of responsibilities/description of the work?
The application is open for a highly motivated scientist with a strong background in vascular biomedicine and proven expertise in experimental thrombosis and inflammation models using mouse models. The research project is focused on studies to analyze function, regulation and targeting of a plasma protease, blood coagulation factor XII that initates proinflammatory and procoagulant reactions. Factor XII is activated by an inorganic polymer, polyphosphate and the polyphosphate-factor XII pathway has been recognized to have critical functions for thromboembolic, allergic and inflammatory/infectious diseases. For further information please see the our web page and the recent publications: Oschatz, C. et al. Immunity 34:258 (2011); Müller, F. et al. Cell 139:1142 (2009) and Renné, T. et al. Blood 120:4296 (2012). The applicant needs to have strong competence in running projects independently but also having good abilities for team work and cooperation within a dynamic group of scientists with broad expertise and from different nationalities.
A doctoral degree within the area of biomedical research or corresponding foreign degree is required. A person is eligible for a postdoc position if he/she has obtained a PhD not more than seven years before the last date of employment as postdoc.
Applications of candidates with experience in models of experimental thrombosis and hemostasis models, models of thromboembolic disease such as myocardial infarction or stroke and inflammation/infection models are highly appreciated. Documented skills in cell and molecular biology and protein biochemistry are also required. Competence within the area of thrombosis and hemostasis is a merit. Proven ability to write scientific articles and a track record of publications in international refereed journals is required. The applicant will be evaluated based on education and previous experience, relevance for the project, publications and track records, motivation and cooperative ability. Personal suitability is also an important criterion.
