Opening For Post Doctoral Research Assistant - Liverpool

Full time, Fixed-Term appointment to 30th April 2016
LSTM is an internationally recognised centre of excellence for research in tropical diseases. The creation of effective links with governments, organisations and institutions and responding to the health needs of communities allows LSTM to promote improved health, particularly for people of the less developed / resource poorest countries in the tropics and sub-tropics.
We are seeking to appoint a Post Doctoral Research Assistant to work as part of a multidisciplinary team of scientists led by LSTM but working in collaboration with our industrial partner Epistem UK.
The post will involve the development and testing of molecular diagnostic tools for Tuberculosis and HIV. These assays will be integrated into mobile, lab-on-chip devices and require testing in LSTM’s Category III facilities for the limit of detection, sensitivity and specificity. The post will involve developing innovative ways to process clinical samples and assess the biosafety of tests. You will also work closely with Epistem (Manchester, UK), and attend meetings to inform and update progress on diagnostic development.
As you will be involved in the development and testing of molecular diagnostic tools, you will have gained a wide range of skills from working within a research laboratory such as primer and probe design, bioinformatics and culturing in Category III facilities. Previous experience in culturing Tuberculosis and HIV would be advantageous.
Excellent communication skills and the ability to develop effective working relationships with a range of people and across a range of disciplines is also crucial to the role, as you will have frequent interaction and liaison with our industrial partners.
With a PhD in a relevant subject area, and the experience outlined above, we are looking for an individual with well developed research and analytical skills, plus the ability to work as an integral and co-operative member of a multi-disciplinary research team. You must possess excellent time management and organisational skills with the capability to achieve research objectives independent of day to day supervision.
