Academic Position: Food Structure and Digestion - Belgium

Academic Position: Food Structure and Digestion: an Engineering Approach : Leuven, Belgium.

KU Leuven invites applications for a full-time academic position at its Department of Microbial and Molecular Systems (M2S). We are looking for a dynamic and motivated individual (m/f) with an excellent research record to build a research program in the Department's Centre for Food and Microbial Technology that couples a food digestion model systems approach with the impact of food processing and structure on digestion.

The candidate is expected to develop a fundamental, interdisciplinary and internationally oriented integrated research program on food structure and digestion, using a systems approach. He/she will develop a scientific output that adheres to the highest international standards. The research will include an engineering approach to design and validate in vitro and in vivo gastro-intestinal models to study the mechanisms and kinetics of food structure disintegration, digestion and absorption, and its impact on e.g. (micro)-nutrient release, accessibility and availability, satiety and satiation, microbial ecosystems and gut health. The research approach will allow to link tailored food structure and composition engineering during food product processing to physiological processes associated with ingestion, digestion, and absorption. It may integrate (bio)chemical, biomechanical and/or microbiological aspects of food digestion at the different levels of scale (molecular to macro-scale), absorption, and the fate and impact of undigested food material on gut microbial ecosystems and gut health. The successful candidate will support and further expand intrauniversity, regional, national and international research collaborations of the Centre for Food and Microbial Technology. The candidate is expected to work in concertation with the food chemistry, food biochemistry, food biophysics, food processing and engineering and food microbiology experts active at the Centre for Food and Microbial Technology of the Department. She/he is particularly expected to offer and develop a complementary expertise, leading to joint research proposals and synergies with the other academic staff members of the Centre for Food and Microbial Technology and, where appropriate, the Department at large.

We expect enthusiastic participation in the activities of various committees and working parties in the Department and the Faculty of Bioscience Engineering.

The appointment will be made at the rank of assistant professor or higher, depending on the candidate's qualifications.
