Scope of Position: • Laser processing engineer that applies engineering principles and fundamental scientific understanding to develop and improve laser processing and its technology delivery for a wide variety of glass processes. • All Corning business divisions, all stages of product innovation from research and development to manufacturing. Emphasis will likely be on process development and manufacturing. Day to Day Responsibilities: • Strengthen laser processing capabilities in engineering. • Process development and engineering of laser processes and its technology delivery. • Laser processing support through all stages of innovation (including manufacturing). • Support laser processing group through the work on projects that require laser processing, technology delivery for new laser processing systems and provide innovative solutions based on laser processing results. • Support manufacturing through laser processing and delivery processes and applications with results to improve both current and new processes in order to fully meet customer requirements. • Support startup of new designs/processes. • Identify and develop measurements and controls needs for new laser processes and process development. • Work interactively with people across all organizations (RD&E and M). • Participate on project teams. Work Location: • Based in Corning, NY • On-site assignments at manufacturing operations possible Travel: Project dependent, typically up to 20%, mostly Europe and Asia Required Education: • PhD in Physics, Optical Physics, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, specialized in lasers and laser processing Required skills: • Experimental planning and rigorous implementation of designed experiments. • Rigorous problem solving – proficient in the use of DOE, SPC, and other process control/analysis techniques. • Measurements and measurement equipment expertise. • Data analysis skills: ability to use the PC to analyze process data and trends to reach conclusions that help solve laser process problems. Desired Skills: • Industrial Experience: Laser processing experience specific to glass processing, laser processing systems integration. • Technical: Understanding of glass melting processes including furnace and delivery system process design, glass technology, refractories, and precious metal applications. • Working knowledge and application of tools for process control and management Required Experience: • 3+ years laser processing development • Experience in measurements, controls, and/or laser processes. Soft Skills: • Strong interpersonal skills – effective at interacting and communicating across varying payroll levels. • Able to work in a team environment to solve problems or produce a product. • Confident presentation skills that convince customers and management of technical direction – ability to tailor message to the audience.
