This is an outstanding career opportunity to play a key role in the development and growth of the Nottingham Health Science Biobank (NHSB), which also includes the Breast Cancer Campaign Tissue Bank (BCCTB) and part of EMPATH a joint venture between UHL and NUH, sharing our expertise and resources, with a vision to be the premier pathology service in the country.

In conjunction with the Deputy Director, the post holder’s will

    manage the provision of service delivery in the NHSB, includes the BCCTB, according to agreed departmental objectives by appropriate allocation of staff and material resources.
    provide leadership, management and specialist scientific guidance.
    act as the Breast Cancer Campaign’s primary point of contact for all operational aspects of the BCCTB. The role is responsible for ensuring that best practice agreed for the BCCTB is implemented locally and for regular status reporting to Campaign to enable tracking of key performance indicators for the Bank.
    be an honorary member of Campaign’s Tissue Bank Management Team and as such, participate in regular meetings both at Campaign’s office and at other BCCTB centres, with Operations Managers from other sites.
    be expected to manage the area while maintaining a high level of scientific knowledge, leading others to perform (and where appropriate performing) specialised techniques on pathological samples using various technologies for example in-situ hybridisation, tissue micro-array (TMA) production, DNA and RNA extraction.
    contribute to the strategic development of the service, providing expert advice on service delivery and resource requirements, including manpower planning
    ensure management and training of staff in their area is in accordance with the department’s training plan and ensures that staff duties are consistent with their competence.
    manage staff in the area to include sickness absence, disciplinary, grievance and counselling issues.

CANDIDATE PROFILE - Operations Manager

NHSB is seeking to appoint an exceptional Operations Manager with the following profile:

EXPERIENCE

    Scientist with MSc Postgraduate qualification in a Biological subject or equivalent
    Knowledge & experience of NHS organisations and procedures.
    Evidence of formal management training / recognised management qualification
    Significant experience at clinical /professional management level and clinical /professional leadership.
    Up to date knowledge and experience of a wide range of laboratory processes both within speciality for example in-situ hybridisation, tissue micro-array (TMA) production, DNA and RNA extraction.
    Up to date knowledge of the operational processes used within Biobanks and of Quality Management systems.
    Experience of research background.
    Familiar with the Human Tissue Act and requirements for Tissue Banks.
    Experience or involvement in committees or organisations outside workplace
    Ability to demonstrate good team-building and leadership skills.
    Experience of the management of complex projects
