Works with Editors and team of expert Associate Editors to ensure timely, accurate, and consistent delivery of publishable material to ACS Publications staff.
Assists the Editors with soliciting manuscripts and reviews and developing special issues with associated enhanced features. Manages workflows for invited reviews-type content, cover art, and award lectureship.
Supports the Editors in strategic development, monitors journal and competitor statistics to report on issues and trends, plans and executes Editors and Editorial Advisory Board meetings.
In partnership with the Editors, identifies new and emerging trends of the field in the literature and at conferences for topics for Reviews, Perspectives, and other journal content. Develops and implements mechanisms for recruiting manuscripts in those areas.
Represents the journal and networks with authors and reviewers at site visits, selected scientific conferences, and exhibits to acquire and maintain a deep understanding of the needs and trends within the communities served by the journals. Maintains contact with authors, reviewers, and outside experts including those in the publishing industry.
Coordinates with other departments (Production & Manufacturing, Sales & Marketing, Web Innovation, Global Editorial & Author Services, others) to ensure efficiency, timeliness, and overall high quality of the published product.
Effectively represents the journal in correspondence and collaboration with Editors, authors, reviewers, and ACS staff on topics related to peer-review, ethical issues, and other aspects of the journal.
Works with press offices in highlighting the journals and increasing publicity. Implements and manages social media for the journals.
Assists ACS publication staff with developing and implementing new features, services, and products in the publication portfolio.
Advanced degree (Ph.D.) in sciences strongly preferred, preferably chemistry or chemical engineering; background in the catalysis field and knowledge of various research communities (molecular, heterogeneous, and biocatalysis) desirable. Bachelor Degree and combined 7+ years of relevant training and experience in an academic or industrial chemistry setting required; experience in STM publishing a plus. Excellent written and verbal communication with both technical and nontechnical audiences, decision making, leadership, and analytical skills required. Demonstrated proficiency with basic word processing, spreadsheet, and Web-based and social media tools required. This position is based in the Washington, DC offices of the American Chemical Society. Some travel required.
