Opening For Geographical Information Specialist : Sand Hutton

 Geographical Information Specialist
Sand Hutton, York
As one of the country's leading emergency response services, the role of the Animal Health and Veterinary Laboratories Agency is to help safeguard animal health and welfare and public health, protect the economy and enhance food security through research, surveillance and inspection.
In this key role at the National Wildlife Management Centre, you will provide leadership in geographic information and GIS. Your expertise will underpin the successful delivery of our scientific projects and contingency responses – particularly at the bidding, data collection and data analysis stages. We will look to you to source funding for research and commercial projects, develop GI solutions across the Agency, provide basic GIS training and proactively identify work within the Centre that could benefit from GI solutions. From time to time, you may also take part in field surveys or assist with wildlife management exercises.
Qualified to at least degree level (or equivalent) in an appropriate geographical or ecological subject, you will bring to the role in-depth knowledge of GIS, including data availability, software (the ArcGIS suite v.10.2), programming (Python) and spatial databases. You demonstrate high standards of geographic data management, analysis and interpretation, plus a proven ability to write high quality scientific reports or peer-reviewed papers. With excellent communication skills and a collaborative approach, you have a flair for networking and making presentations to external audiences.
In return for your hard work and commitment, you'll enjoy excellent training and professional development opportunities, plus attractive civil service benefits.
