Opening For Galaxy Platform Development Officer : Norwich

Galaxy Platform Development Officer
Norwich, UK
Starting salary range £28,100 – £31,300 per annum

The Genome Analysis Centre (TGAC) is an institute supported by the BBSRC to ensure that biological science in the UK has access to a skill base in genomics technologies and bioinformatics to deliver programmes leading to improved food security, advances in industrial biotechnology and improved human health and wellbeing.

The Galaxy Platform Development Officer will initiate the deployment, maintenance and training of the Galaxy analysis platform. TGAC needs a flexible approach to the analysis of data in order to enable internal researchers, external collaborators and researchers at other UK BBSRC institutes to have ready access to a wide range of analytical tools and pipelines. As such, TGAC’s reputation as a UK hub for innovative bioinformatics and genomics and their applications in a broad spectrum of bioscience will be strengthened through the provisioning of a Galaxy instance over our powerful HPC hardware.

The post holder will have the opportunity to gather and act on the analysis demands of the UK genomics community, providing training on the Galaxy platform itself as well as tools and workflows used. Through developing, testing and launching a series of training events and initiatives around the TGAC Galaxy asset, TGAC will be well placed as a national node for Galaxy training.

To be considered for this post you will have significant experience in the bioinformatics field, with particular focus on the deployment and usage of common bioinformatics tools and pipelines, and the following skills and expertise:

• Experience in platform- and software-as-a-service (PaaS, SaaS) architectures, i.e. the “Cloud”
• Good working knowledge of a scripting language such as Perl or Python
• Good working knowledge of Unix and Linux operating systems
• Knowledge of the Galaxy platform from a user’s perspective
• Experience of working in a rapidly changing technological environment

An MSc and/or PhD in a relevant discipline, e.g. computer science, bioinformatics would be highly advantageous.

Salary on appointment will be within the range £28,100 to £31,300 per annum depending on qualifications and experience. The post is available for 36 months in the first instance.
