Duke University’s Pratt School of Engineering was founded in 1939. It is home to 125 faculty, 1,200 undergraduates and nearly 900 postgraduates across four departments and six externally funded research centers. In the past decade external research funding has more than doubled, while new awards to Duke Engineering have risen by 80 per cent in the past five years.
The Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science is renowned for a broad range of research areas, including acoustics; aerodynamics and fluid mechanics; biomechanics and biomaterials; dynamics and controls; energy technology and thermodynamics; manufacturing; and materials science and mechanics. Upon the conclusion of Professor Earl Dowell’s term, it is seeking a world-class scholar to take on the role of Chair of the Department. Building upon the impressive momentum of the past decade, the successful candidate will have the presence and academic credibility to act as Chair of 23 of some of the most preeminent faculty in their fields, as well as the creativity and vision to head a Department that is fundamental to the strategic research priorities of the School and the University.
The post is full-time and based at Duke University in Durham, NC. The salary and benefits will be fully commensurate with the seniority and nature of the appointment and will reflect the required high caliber of the successful candidate.
