Are you an experienced research funding professional who can help us beat cancer sooner?
 
At Cancer Research UK, we aim to save more lives by preventing, controlling and curing cancer. Our Science Funding team manages our discovery science and pre-clinical translational research, a key component of which is the translational portfolio. We are looking for an experienced individual to lead our approach to funding the best research across this portfolio, including drug discovery, biomarker discovery and development. The Head of Translational Research Funding will also play a key role in the development of our long term strategies to support translational research. Weâ??re looking for an experienced manager with excellent relationship development, management, and leadership skills to join us and lead our approach translational research funding.
 
Key responsibilities will include:
 
Accountability for the peer review and funding of CRUKâ??s translational research applications and awards
Leading on the implementation of new translational funding schemes in line with CRUKâ??s organisational and research strategy, including the new Grand Challenge funding stream
Responsibility for the translational research budget, including preparation of annual budgets and operating plans
Managing a team of four Research Funding Managers, building a motivated and high-performing team with a culture of quality performance and continuous development
Leading on CRUKâ??s external networking activity across the wider translational research landscape, including pro-active engagement with the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and not-for-profit drug discovery sectors
Reporting to the Director of Science Funding, as Head of Translational Research Funding you will bring your people management and leadership skills to make a key contribution to the ongoing development of CRUKâ??s long-term translational research strategy.
 
To take on this important challenge, youâ??ll haveâ?¦
 
A PhD in biomedical science, with substantial post graduate experience
Experience of working in a discovery or development environment, either industrial or academic
Experience of engaging with the scientific research community, at all levels
Excellent relationship development and management skills
Excellent strategic planning and decision making skills
Experience of project management frameworks, tools and techniques
Proven financial management skills, with an ability to analyse, report, forecast and provide insight for the future planning of the directorate
