post doc salary and living expenses - usa

 Dear All
I require some urgent help. I like to know what would be the postdoc salary in USA? I heard approximately 42000$. Is it same in all universities. I will be searching around columbus region. What would be net salary or take home salary after the reductions?

Can I know the following?
Living expenses? And how much could I save?
Taxes?
Should we pay the health insurance or the university will take care?
Apart from taxes, what all will be deducted generally from salary?

I will be very thankful if I get help regarding this, as this would help me to decide on the transition.

Thanks a lot in advance
Best regards

Hi gsitara11,

Hi gsitara11,

Many PIs pay first year post-doc per NIH guideline. Right now it is USD 39264 per year. But the number is negotiatable- some pay more than that, some pay less than that. Living expenses really depend on which part of the country you are looking are. Even in the same state, living expenses vary. Benifit (insurances) also depends on the university- some have better package and some don't. No matter what, you still have to pay some of the insurance out from your pocket (hence deducted out from your monthly salary in addition to tax)

Good luck.
