Join us in Amsterdam for The EMBO Meeting 2009

2009 sees the start of a new tradition – The EMBO Meeting, an annual conference aiming to advance the life sciences through programmes reflecting the concepts and high-resolution approaches of modern biological research.

Scientists young and old will come together to tell and to learn of new developments; to gossip and to forge new collaborations; and, hopefully, to leave motivated with fresh vigour and ideas that lead to new discoveries.

The EMBO Meeting represents the very fabric of what EMBO is about - recognizing and fostering talented scientists, empowering them to advance the life sciences to understand how life works and share knowledge to meet the challenges of a changing world.

Hans Clevers and Stephen West put together this year’s scientific programme. There will be special lectures, career forums and skill development workshops, poster sessions, sponsored symposia and exhibits, prizes and award ceremonies. EMBO aims to inform and inspire participants whatever the stage of their scientific careers.

Here are just a few of the highlights:

• Professor Martin Rees (Cambridge University), Astronomer Royal, cosmologist and astrophysicist, will expand our horizons beyond the life sciences
• Ronald Plasterk, Minister of Education, Culture and Science in The Netherlands, former molecular geneticist and media columnist, will inform us on current issues in science policy
• Professor Harald zur Hausen, EMBO Member and winner of The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2008, will tell of his discovery that human papilloma viruses cause cervical cancer
• Svante Pääbo, Director at the Max-Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, will discuss molecular analyses of the Neanderthal genome
• A Science & Society session will connect the dots between plant science and technology to examine the future of sustainable agriculture

The EMBO Meeting takes over from former ELSO meetings to bring together life scientists from Europe and around the world.
