Opening For Quantitative Ecologist : York

Use your population modelling skills to help protect our natural environment.

Take this vital mathematical modelling role, and you will play a key part in finding solutions to wildlife diseases, thereby protecting our landscape, our livestock and our people.

One of the country's leading emergency response services, the role of the Animal Health and Veterinary Laboratories Agency is to help safeguard animal health and welfare and public health, protect the economy and enhance food security through research, surveillance and inspection.

Now we need a quantitative research scientist to amend and implement current computer models for the investigation of control strategies for bovine tuberculosis and wildlife rabies contingency modelling. You will also devise and run new models for the management of other diseases or the control of wildlife populations. It's a chance to take on challenging data analysis, programming and scientific reporting work – and make a difference as you do so.

You'll come to us with a passion for wildlife and ecology issues and how these affect animals. Your PhD in a science-based subject, ideally in a mathematical or quantitative ecological discipline, will be matched by a proven track record of population modelling and applying mathematics to ecological research. You'll add to this basic GIS skills, a flair for report writing, and the ability to present work to customers. Experience of working with field biologists would be desirable, but not essential.

In return for your hard work and commitment, you'll enjoy excellent training and professional development opportunities, plus attractive civil service benefits including an on-site nursery, onsite gym and subsidised restaurant.
