Principal Research Scientist - Biomaterials: Wyeth, Cambridge, Massachusett

This is a senior level scientist with proven independent performance in both drug discovery and as a basic research scientist, with a record of accomplishment in research and demonstrated effectiveness as a team member on a discovery or development project. This individual will lead a group of 2-4 people in Cambridge/Andover within the Musculoskeletal Therapy Department of Discovery. They will provide scientific direction and expertise for the identification of new delivery vehicles for therapeutics in the bone, tendon, cartilage repair/regeneration research programs. The candidate will lead research teams to identify, validate and characterize new drug delivery vehicles as well as work with various groups in Musculoskeletal therapy and Discovery groups and Biopharma groups to identify, optimize and evaluate lead compound/delivery combinations. The candidate will develop scientific credentials through publications and presentations.
Job Responsibilities
- Demonstrate special skills and knowledge into a particular research project as evidenced by proven successes at the bench.
- Demonstrate a high level of initiative in performing experiments, particularly when problems are encountered which require troubleshooting.
- Conduct multiple complex experiments in parallel.
- Read and understand the scientific literature with particular insight, as proven by design, implementation, and interpretation of results of novel experiments. Consistently demonstrate scientific curiosity through reading and talking to colleagues.
- Exhibit exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, allowing dissemination of complex scientific issues to a diverse audience.
- Supervise other scientists as necessary and appropriate.
- Present a formal seminar on a yearly basis, as well as presentations outside of the company on a regular basis. Regularly reach scientific milestones as evidenced by scientific publications. Present results of independent experiments at section meetings, write reports for internal communications as well as invention records and complete scientific papers for peer reviewed journals.
- Contribute to the discovery of new products not simply by performing routine assays and procedures, but also through the advancement of scientific knowledge in the field.    
Position Requirements:
Basic Qualifications
- A Doctorate Degree is required. A major in material science, drug delivery, physiology or a related biological science is preferred. Wyeth employees with sufficient work experience but without a Doctorate Degree may be considered.
- At least 2 years of Postdoctoral training and/or work experience in drug delivery in bone/tendon or cartilage indications.
- At least 6 years of experience in the employment of tissue engineering, material science or physiology to address important scientific research questions in the areas musculoskeletal drug delivery in an academic/medical and/or pharmaceutical/biotechnology environment.
- Working knowledge of material science and drug delivery for musculoskeletal indications.
- Working knowledge of BMP and Wnt signaling is preferable.
- Understanding of small molecule and biotherapeutic drug discovery and development.
- Strong leadership, management, communication and collaboration skills. People management experience is preferred.
- A strong record of publications and presentations.
