Gene expression databases - using RIKEN etc

I am trying to make sense of the data contained in the RIKEN expression database - without much luck.
Ideally I want to look at the expression levels of certain mRNAs in various tissues in the mouse and human. The information I have found so far is in an Excel format (about 1000 rows x 100 columns!) and it looks like the various mRNAs have numerical codes, for which there is no key.
Is there a software package / ap / front end etc that enables the data to be understood by people (who don't think in binary)?
Also which other databases should I look at?

Thanks
