How did you learn Spectroscopy/Spectrometry? Any recommendations?
  • Hello,
  •
  • I'm finishing my second quarter of Organic lab (the final is tomorrow, actually), and I realized that my knowledge of spectroscopy is basically scrapped together from lecture notes, random Google searches and a hard to read book (Techniques in Organic Chemistry. Being as I'm planning on becoming a full fledged Chemist in a few short years, I'd like to more thoroughly learn Spectroscopy/trometry. I'm sure I'll be taking classes that more fully flesh out theory/interpretation, but I'm tired of looking at MS's and seeing peaks that I can't quite find the origin of. Or NMR's where the peaks are nowhere near where I expect (one thing that tends to get me is estimating peaks when there are two nearby deshielding groups or intense conjugation, etc). IR isn't too bad, but according to my TA "nobody really uses IR", so apparently my abilities in that field are nigh on useless.
