This is most likely a strange question, but how do I read my private messages? I do not seem to find any button to click on to check my messages?

If you receive a PM, then you will get an email to your registered email account that will contain a link to the message.

And yes, you are right, but thats not what I mean.

I do not keep al those warning emails so after I have read the email and checked the message I most likely will delete the email.

However : sometimes I would like to check my messages back to verify something or check something.
So I wonder how I can check my messages without the help of an email that states that I have received a message...

I find it very strange that there is no button on this site to go directly to your inbox.

There used to be a PM link on this site that would direct you to your messages. I see the link to PM someone, but not a link to check my own messages. With the recent updates, it seems to have been taken away. Any chance it can be added back to the site? As lucilius stated, it is nice to be able to look back at previous PMs.
