Description of event:
Regulation of adult neurogenesis: from epigenetics to behavior
Description
Adult neurogenesis, the lifelong generation of new neurons in privileged regions of the adult
brain has turned out to be an important aspect of how the
brain maintains structural plasticity. Adult neurogenesis improves function in the hippocampus and the olfactory bulb and in turn is regulated by
behavior. Underlying these effects of
behavior, neurogenesis is regulated by an intriguingly complex hierarchy of events at numerous levels, from the systems level over long and short-range
signaling molecules and
cell-to-
cell contact to
genetic and epigenetic changes.
This conference (the third in the series - 2007 in Dresden and 2010 in Frauenchiemsee), will attempt to capture the regulatory complexity and link it to the proposed functionality of the adult-generated neurons. The conference is open to everyone from researchers to clinicians who are seeking to learn about the impact of adult neurogenesis on their fields of
medicine and will provide an excellent opportunity for younger researchers to present their work to an international audience and facilitiate discussion with the experts.

Venue
Casa Convalescència is located within the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau and constitutes one of the later works of Catalonian Modernism. Planned to house general hospital services, maintenance shops and laundry, in the end, the Casa Convalescència pavilion was used to host patients with terminal illnesses as well as a church. The hospital complex was declared an Historic Artistic Monument in 1978 and later named part of UNESCO’s Cultural Heritage for Humanity in 1997. Casa Convalescència's unique architecture is rich in modernist elements including glasswork that illuminates the building's grand entrance and cupola as well as ornate tile work that adorns the ground floor halls.
Location
Barcelona is the capital city of Catalonia and the second largest city in Spain after Madrid. The city has a rich cultural heritage including architectural works of Antoni Gaudí (Casa Milà, Casa Batlló and the Sagrada Família church) and Lluís Domènech i Montaner (Hospital de Sant Pau and Palau de la Música Catalana) and is a designated UNESCO World Heritage site.
