Buffered Solutions

 

A buffered solution resists changes in pH.

 

Buffers are used when tissues or organisms are to be maintained at a precise pH, usually between pH 7.2 and 7.4 for human and many animal tissues.

 

A phosphate buffer is one of the more common buffers used and is made up of a precise mixture of sodium monobasic phosphate (NaH2PO4) and sodium dibasic phosphate (Na2HPO4).
