About My Research

Bisphenol-A Analysis: Validation by USEPA Method 625:

In support of environmental clients the laboratory has extended the application of USEPA 625 (GCMS with solvent extraction)

  • Validation performed at a spiking level of 1.0 ug/L in accordance with 40CFR Part 136 Appendix B
  • Laboratory reporting level set to 1.0 ug/L
  • Calculated MDL of 0.32 ug/L
  • Mean recovery at 1.0 ug/L of 74.7%
  • Applicable to wastewater and surface water samples
  • More information at Bisphenol-A Info

Perchlorate Analysis: Validation of USEPA Method 314.1

  • Validation performed at 0.3 ug/L
  • Laboratory reporting level set to 0.3 ug/L

Improving and streamlining EPA analytical methodology:

  • Improved sensitivity for EPA wet chemistry techniques for traditional pollutants
  • Improving automation and integration of instrumentation and LIMS for bench and instrument based analyses

Improving sensitivity for EPA GCMS procedures using LVI, SIM, and higher sensitivity instrumentation.

  • EPA Method 625 detection levels to 1PPB or less using improved sensitivity instrumentation and instrument conditions
  • PAH's by EPA Method 8270C-SIM to 0.10PPB on water samples

Improving information from GCMS unknown peak identification.

  • Extended information reporting for unidentified TIC's including molecular structure information
  • Utilization of latest NIST library and algorithm improving overall match fit and reference library size

Utilization of ICPMS for solving novel analytical problems

Applying EPA analytical methodology to novel matrices and analytes.

Developing solutions for non-routine analytical problems for water, materials, and products.

Trace analysis for contaminants in consumer materials, foods, etc:

  • CPSIA Testing: E1003-09 (following AOAC 974.02) for lead and ASTM F963-08 for a suite of  elements in consumer products.
  • Pesticides and trace metals in neutracuticals.
  • PAHs in neutraceuticals.

AVS-SEM Analysis: Acid Volatile Sulfide (AVS) and Simultaneously Extracted Metals (SEM): Application of AVS-SEM Analysis to Sediment Samples

  • Available sulfide effectively binds numerous bivalent heavy metals making them unavailable to sediment organisms
  • Allows prediction of toxicity of heavy metals in sediment sample
  • Well recognised by USEPA in applicability
  • More Information at: AVS-SEM Info
  • A number of excellent USEPA publications on sediment toxicity and the application of Equilibrium Partitioning of Sediments Benchmarks (ESB's) are available from NHEERL (National Health and Environmental Effects Research Laboratory)
  • The University of Massachusetts, Amherst has an annual conference; "The Annual Conference on Soils, Sediments, Water & Energy with very good references and information.
